Charges to be filed against truck driver in Route 93 crash

Charges are pending against a truck driver who failed to stop at a truck pull-off that resulted in his rig crashing over an embankment in Nesquehoning.

The crash happened along Route 93 Wednesday afternoon.

Nesquehoning Police Chief Michael Weaver said that the driver, who he did not identify, was traveling southbound on 93 and was driving too fast for the hill. The trailer he was pulling was also fully loaded, which adding a significant amount of weight.

Weaver said he failed to stop at the top of the mountain, which also was a factor in the incident.

The driver passed up the runaway truck ramp and attempted to use a small road near the bottom of the hill before the Route 209 intersection, but due to the speed, tipped over and slide through the guide rail and over the embankment. The truck came to a stop just above an active rail line.

Weaver said that the crash did not affect rail traffic.

Emergency crews responded and had to close the northbound lane of Route 93 at the Route 209 intersection and detoured southbound traffic into the northbound lane for the time being.

Weaver said that they had to wait until the 4 p.m. freight train went through before trying to remove the rig because they weren’t sure if they needed to cut trees.

Heavy tow equipment from Zenier’s Automotive in Hazleton was called in, but due to the weight of the rig, as well as the angle, crews were struggling. Another company, Kisenwether’s of Drums, was called in to assist. At that time, Weaver said all lanes were closed to allow for a safe removal of the rig. Route 93 was closed for several hours as they worked.

Weaver said that the driver was not seriously injured.

Assisting police included the three Nesquehoning fire companies, Weatherly fire company, Nesquehoning and Weatherly fire police, the two towing companies and Lehighton Ambulance.

This is the second crash on Route 93 involving a tractor-trailer in the last few months.

In September, a rig carrying cookies, soap and other products rolled while descending Route 93 before catching fire.

The Route 93 mountain has also been the site of numerous crashes over the years, including three tractor-trailer crashes in a week in 2016.

The driver of this rig failed to pull over at the top of the Broad Mountain truck pull-off and then at the runaway truck ramp and went over the embankment with a loaded trailer. COPYRIGHT LARRY NEFF/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS
