Coroner releases report on firefighters

The Lehigh County coroner said Friday that the New Tripoli firefighters died of asphyxia and the thermal injuries from the house fire Wednesday in West Penn Township.

Firefighter Marvin Gruber, 59, of New Tripoli and Assistant Chief Zachary T. Paris, 36, were trapped in the burning building.

Gruber was pronounced dead on Wednesday at 5:36 p.m. at St. Luke’s Hospital, Miners Campus. Paris was pronounced dead on Wednesday at 5:43 p.m. at St. Luke’s Hospital, Miners Campus.

Autopsies were completed today at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office & Forensic Center.

The coroner said the manner of death is “pending investigation”

due to the ongoing investigation.

The fire broke out at 3:51 p.m. Wednesday at 1121 Clamtown Road, West Penn Township, Schuylkill County.

The initial report was that a resident was trapped inside the residence.

The fire went to a third alarm, with fire units from Schuylkill County, Lehigh County, Carbon County, and Berks County dispatched to assist.

The resident, Christopher Kammerdiener, was found deceased in the rear of the property.

Fire damage was extensive in the residence.

Two West Penn Township firefighters were treated for injuries, one was flown to a hospital and remains in intensive care.

The West Penn Township Police are leading the investigation.
