West Penn Township police report on fatal fire

On Dec. 7 at 3:51 p.m., West Penn Township Police along with The township volunteer fire company and Emergency medical services were dispatched to a reported working structure fire at 1121 Clamtown Road.

It was reported that there was a resident entrapment. Upon arrival, responders saw that the house was engulfed with smoke and the initial fire toward the back of the building and in the basement.

Searches were conducted for the missing resident, along with fire suppression.

The fire went to a third alarm, with fire units from Schuylkill County, Lehigh County, Carbon County, and Berks County dispatched to assist.

Fire damage was extensive in the residence. During the fire, two firefighters, Zachary Paris and Marvin Gruber, both of New Tripoli, died battling the blaze.

Two West Penn Township firefighters were treated for injuries, one was flown to a hospital and remains in intensive care.

Christopher Kammerdiener, a resident of the home, was found deceased in the rear of the property.

West Penn Township Police are currently on scene. This incident remains an active investigation.

A procession will begin at 2:30 today in New Philadelphia to transport the firefighters back to the Lehigh Valley.

The procession will travel on Route 209 to 309 to 100 and to Tilghman.
