Former chief pleads guilty to harassment

The former Weissport police chief, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl and sentenced to a long state prison term, was in Carbon County court on Tuesday to enter a guilty plea in a pending simple assault case.

Brent Getz, 30, of Lehighton, appeared before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to enter a plea to a summary offense of harassment. The state attorney general’s office agreed to drop a simple assault count in a plea deal.

Getz was charged for an incident on May 8, 2021, involving a relative.

Nanovic imposed a fine of $300 and ordered Getz make restitution for medical bills sustained by the relative of $1,145. He must also pay court costs of over $1,000.

On July 15 Getz was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve 16 to 32 years in a state correctional institution on charges of rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse of a child, aggravated assault of a child and indecent assault of a child. The jail term will be followed by three years of state probation. He must also register for the rest of his life as a sexual offender.

He was convicted by a jury on March 10 following a trial.

He was charged by the state Attorney General’s office in March 2019 with raping a young Lehighton area girl at a home in Franklin Township. Charged with Getz was Gregory Wagner Jr., 31, of Lehighton.

In November 2020, Wagner pleaded guilty to one count each of rape of a child, and sexual exploitation of children, before Matika.

On April 28, Wagner was sentenced by Matika to serve 10 to 20 years in a state prison, which was part of a plea deal he made with the AG’s office in return for him testifying at Getz’s trial.

Getz has appealed the verdict and sentence imposed. Those appeals are pending before Matika.

Getz has been held in the county prison pending the hearing of the appeals by the court. Court personnel said he will be transferred to a state facility shortly.
