Mayors knock Bulldogs out of catbird seat in DeSchriver rankings

There’s a big shakeup in the rankings this week and we have a new No. 1, sort of.

Top billing, and mucho kudos, go to the mayors of Jim Thorpe and Palmerton, Michael Sofranko and Don Herrmann, respectively.

The mayors helped organize, participated in and had good fun with a canned food drive at the Jim Thorpe-Palmerton football game last Friday night.

The mayors showed not only students, but the community, what it means to be a public servant.

And for kicks - I’m sure it helped with donations - the mayors had a little wager. So, Sofranko will wear a Palmerton jersey at the next Jim Thorpe council meeting because Palmerton won the game.

Sofranko can don the jersey with pride knowing that he, and his counterpart, helped their communities.

Mr. Mayor, don’t toss that jersey in the rubbish, I’ll be needing it when I jump on the Blue Bomber Bandwagon.

Here’s this week’s version of the DeSchriver Power Rankings.

No. 9 - Marian

Colts’ coach Stan Dakosty made the case for me after losing to Line Mountain last week. “What did we give up, two touchdowns on turnovers?” Yep and three spots in the rankings.

No. 8 - Panther Valley

The Panthers keep whipsawing their fans ... and me. They feasted on Shenandoah last week, but need to string together a few wins to alleviate the stiffness in our necks, or buy me a hot tub.

No. 7 - Lehighton

Fun bus ride back from Wilson for the Indians last Saturday, but they only jump two spots because they lost to the team in front of them in Week 2.

No. 6 - Tamaqua

Salisbury, already beaten by two Carbon County schools this season, limps into Tamaqua tonight, probably wishing they were going to the Mahoning Valley Cinema to see “Spider-Man: No Way Home” instead of the football stadium where it’s Hall of Fame night.

No. 5 - Jim Thorpe

The Olympians hung with Palmerton until that juggernaut offense of the Blue Bombers revved up and scored the last four touchdowns of the game. Jim Thorpe goes to Pine Grove Saturday and here’s all you need to know about that game: Northern Lehigh beat Pine Grove 61-0 last week.

No. 4 - Pleasant Valley

Just like the Bears last week against Dieruff, I’m pretty sluggish today so I’ll just take the easy way out and drop them two spots.

No. 3 - Palmerton

Circle, underline and put a whole slew of exclamation points around Oct. 28 on your calendar. That’s when Northern Lehigh rolls into Palmerton for the season-ender - I know it’s breaking-news-like early to hype this game, but the two teams have scored a combined 349 points this season - that’s 43.6 ppg. per team.

No. 2 - Northwestern

This is the type of game that makes coaches gnaw on their fingernails. The Tigers, with several formidable opponents after this one, go to 1-3 Lehighton tonight, which is basking in the glow of a one-game win streak.

No. 1 - Northern Lehigh

The Bulldogs can feel the mayors nudging them from the top spot ... and then there’s that other little worrisome bugger - the North Schuylkill Spartans, who are pretty gosh-darn good.
