Weatherly man sent to state prison for assaulting correction officers

A Weatherly man was sentenced on Friday to a state prison for assaulting three correction officers at the Carbon County prison.

Gabriel Michael Hines, 20, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve one to three years in a state correctional institution on three counts of assault by a prison. The terms run concurrently.

He was arrested on Aug. 27, 2021, at the prison after he participated in a “food fight” at the jail. Reportedly, several prisoners were causing a disturbance at the prison, complaining about the food be served.

Hines was one of the prisoners who participated in the disturbance. When officers attempted to take him to another part of the prison in an attempt to defuse the situation he fought with them and resisted. Three guards suffered injuries in the incident that required medical attention.

Hines’ attorney, Mary Margaret Connors of the public defender’s office, said her client has a history of mental health issues. She said he self-medicated and got addicted to drugs. She argued that the combination of the mental health issues and drug use led to his actions at the prison.

Nanovic noted Hines has long prior criminal record considering his age. Nanovic also noted that Hines committed the acts while he was under a state sentence imposed in Monroe County.

In addition to the prison term, Nanovic ordered Hines to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, supply a DNA sample, attend and successfully complete an anger management course, pay court costs of over $1,000, and make an attempt to get his GED.

Hines is currently an inmate in the prison. He has completed his minimum of his Monroe sentence. Nanovic ruled his sentence run concurrent with Monroe.
