Slatington OKs contract, union members still must vote

Slatington borough council approved the contract with the SEIU Local 668 at their meeting Monday night.

Borough Manager Dan Stevens said the contract now goes back to the union members for a vote. The negotiating committees for both the council and the union agreed to the terms of the contract, but it isn’t official until both the council and union members have approved it.

Stevens said the union members are supposed to meet on June 21 to discuss it. Until it’s approved by the union, the terms can’t be discussed publicly.

The borough employees who are members of the union work on the roads crew, at the water treatment plant, and at the sewer treatment plant, Stevens said.

In other business, the council authorized Lehigh Engineering, the borough’s engineering firm, to prepare bid documents for the Victory Park restroom renovation project. Once the bid documents are ready, then Lehigh Engineering will advertise it.

“We’ve got to get that thing done,” Stevens said about the restoration. “Soon, we hope.”

The borough has a grant for the project but it is a matching grant, so the borough has to pitch in money for the project. The money from the grant has to be used this year, so time is a factor.

In other business, the council:

• Approved making the final payment to Wyoming Electric and Signal Inc. for the Church Street traffic signal improvement in the amount of $14,976;

• Approved the quote from Nicholson Security LLC to install two new cameras for $611.96 for the police station;

• Accepted full payment from Cincinnati Insurance Co. for $4,076.18 for damages and expenses incurred from a water main break caused by a contractor at Main and Church streets, and;

• Approved hiring a new police chief contingent on his passing a background check, and physical and psychological checks.

Stevens said the new chief is extremely well-qualified, but preferred to wait until all of contingencies are met before releasing more information.
