Palmerton considers fencing and funding for dog park

Palmerton continues to iron out details for a field in the west end that will eventually be converted into a dog park.

Borough Manager Donna McGarry said at Thursday’s borough council meeting that she met with three fencing contractors.

“I’m waiting on the third (contractor),” McGarry said. “The first thing we’re looking at is fencing and getting it enclosed.”

Council last month agreed to repurpose the West End Recreation Association Field for use as a dog park.

The field is located along Alley J above portions of the 800 and 900 blocks of Edgemont Avenue.

Councilman Andrew Hollywood said council saw it as an opportunity to repurpose the land, and added there’s a children’s playground area there.

He also said at that time there is a drainage system there, but some maintenance is needed.

Hollywood said there would also be a two-gate system, which is common for most dog parks.

He said the plan is to fund the work with grants and private funding, with the hope that a recreation group would eventually be formed.

McGarry said the borough planned to seek funding for the work to complete the dog park.

There is no official name for the park.
