Slatington OKs trail lighting under bridge
The Slatington borough council gave Lehigh County the green light to pursue trail lighting under the Walnut Street Bridge.
The county owns the bridge, said borough Manager Dan Stevens. The lighting would be installed as part of the bridge replacement project when the intersection of Walnut Street and Main Street is realigned. There would be no cost to the borough for the lighting or installation. The cost would be covered by the county.
“They asked if we’d be interested in the lighting,” Stevens said.
The borough would cover the cost of maintenance and electric.
Council member Jeffrey Hausman said, “I think it would be a good idea.”
Stevens added that it would help to discourage vandalism and make the trail safer.
The council agreed and voted yes to the lighting.
In other business, the council also authorized Lehigh Engineering, the borough’s engineering firm, to put the paving project on East Franklin Street out for bids. Justin Gross, an engineer with Lehigh Engineering, said the plans will be finished next week.
The section of East Franklin to be paved would be from Main Street to Second Street, said Stevens. The work would also include improvements to curbs and sidewalks, curb cuts for ramps, and stormwater drainage.
“We do one every year,” he said about a road paving project.
Stevens said the borough has a grant from Lehigh County’s Department of Community and Economic Development for about $95,000 to help pay for the project.
“We can only use it in certain areas of town,” he said.
Specifications in the grant require that is be used within low to moderate income areas.
A third road project is nearing completion.
The traffic signal at the intersection of Church and Main streets was inspected Wednesday morning by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Stevens said the traffic signal has been working for a few weeks, but the inspection is to make sure everything is working properly. He said the inspection found some minor adjustments that were needed and signage changes.
Although the traffic signal is working, there is still a little work that needs to be done. Stevens explained that a downspout from a nearby structure was connected to a pipe that went under the sidewalk and out to the street. The pipe was removed during the installation of the traffic light, so it needs to be replaced.
