One injured in Kline explosion, police officer charged with burglary

State police at Frackville have charged a Hazleton police officer with an October burglary at the site of an explosion Tuesday morning.

Police said Ladell Emery Hannon, 31, of Hazleton, was arraigned on burglary charges and is being held in Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $300,000.

Shortly before 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, state police received numerous calls about an explosion that occurred in the area of 3 Center St., Kline Township, which is in the village of Kelayres.

While investigating the incident, police learned a burglary occurred at the same location on Oct. 28. Police determined Hannon, a Hazleton city police officer, entered the victim’s residence and removed items. They took Hannon into custody at 3 p.m.

Hannon was charged with burglary, criminal trespass and theft by unlawful taking, and arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 4 at noon in front of Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer. This is an active investigation. Anyone who may have information about this incident is asked to call PSP Frackville at 570-874-5300.

Bombing

Police, who are listing the incident as attempted homicide, said the device detonated outside 3 Center St., injuring a man and causing extensive damage to the building.

“The explosion came from the street,” Cpl. Mark Knock of the state police at Frackville said.

He said a man, whom he did not identify by name, was taken to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest with minor injuries. The PSP Bomb Squad was called to the scene, where McAdoo Fire Chief Bob Leshko was one of the first responders to arrive.

“The explosion rocked my house and I was getting ready for work,” he said.

The fire department received a dispatch for a traumatic injury, followed by a dispatch for an explosion at the aforementioned address. It was still dark when he arrived on scene. Lights from the firetruck were used to illuminate the area.

“We had debris all over the road,” he said.

Leshko said two vehicles were damaged as a result. The windows of the former Immaculate Conception church at Fourth and Center Street were blown out and the back door was open, he said.

The man who was injured was leaving the apartment building when the device exploded, Leshko said.

“He had some burns and some hearing loss. He had some lacerations,” Leshko said.

He spoke to the man about what he saw when he walked outside, but Leshko was unwilling to elaborate.

The chief said there was no fire with the explosion.

“I don’t believe there is any risk to the public from this incident,” he said, believing it was a random act.

Leshko said the apartment building had three tenants including two who were home at the time.

In addition to the fire department, McAdoo Ambulance and Lehigh Valley EMS and state police responded. Kline Township Police were not on duty at the time, Leshko said.
