Lehighton Girl Scout earns trip to White House

Selling Girl Scout Cookies could be a challenge.

But not for a Lehighton elementary student.

Eight-year-old Emily Dick, who is a part of Troop 3241 in Lehighton, wouldn’t take no for an answer. Emily sold a box to someone in each of the 50 states during cookie season from last from January to March. In fact, not only did she hit every state, but three more additional countries.

“Through quarantine, it was really hard to sell cookies. We thought we should sell more cookies in other ways,” Emily said.

Online sales through social media shares were a big part of the success. Emily said the peanut butter patties were a top seller.

As someone new from a different state purchased a box, Emily colored in a different state on a map. Hawaii was the toughest state to find a buyer.

Emily sold 890 boxes last season.

Somehow, officials at the White House found out about Emily’s proactivity. To her surprise, she received an invitation to visit.

“It was an email through my mom’s phone,” Emily said. “When we got in June, we weren’t able to go due to COVID. Then we got another one and we thought it was a fake one.”

Emily’s trip to the nation’s capital was on Wednesday.

She never thought she would earn a trip to the White House by selling Girl Scout Cookies.

“It was very fun and cool to see it in person,” Emily said.

Her favorite part of the White House is the East Room, as she marveled at the history of it.

“There’s this one person named Abigail Adams, who died, and I don’t know if it’s really true, but they said she would hang her laundry in there and you would smell fresh laundry and hear footsteps.”

Emily met some D.C. officials including the press secretary.

“They said I’m very impressed of what you did, and the president would sure be too.”

After a tour, Emily had a chance to check out the Presidential Marine Band with about 40 other spectators.

Emily has been in Girl Scouts for four years with Troop 3241. In school, history is her second favorite subject.

“My favorite is actually reading, because I’m really good at it,” Emily said.

Cookie season begins next month and Emily plans on breaking her personal best record from 2021. She hopes to sell 1,000 boxes.
