Concerns raised over biosolid use in Polk

Polk Township Supervisors voiced concern about a land application for biosolids on the Murphy Farm property.

“Biosolids is sludge from wastewater treatment plants that the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) has approved for use on farmland,” said Supervisors’ Chairman Brian Ahner.

“Because it has been approved by the DEP, we have no authority to stop it,” said James Fareri, Polk Township solicitor.

Questioned on what was grown on the fields using biosolids, Ahner replied, “As far as I know, the crops being grown on the land are not for human consumption, but if the DEP approves the landowner’s request, then the approval is effective for the life of the farm.”
