Carbon County court

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a county prison term last Thursday in a charge of criminal trespass, rated a felony 3.

He was one of three defendants who previously entered guilty pleas to be sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.

Garage entry

Jarred Ricky Lee West, 30, formerly of Lehighton and currently an inmate in the state correctional institution at Camp Hill, Cumberland County, was sentenced to serve six to 18 months in the county prison. In a plea deal a burglary charge was dropped.

He was charged by state police at Lehighton with entering a garage on property along Berger Creek Road in Penn Forest Township on May 28, 2018.

West said he has finished his state sentence on a DUI count, which was one to three years, but was being held in the state prison on the trespass count.

He blamed his criminal activity on a drug addiction problem dating back several years.

Nanovic noted West owes over $20,000 in court costs and fines for other cases.

In addition to the prison term, West was ordered to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, supply a DNA sample, make restitution to the victim for $1,057, and zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use.

The prison term began immediately.

Harassment charge

Monica Lee Sanchez, 37, formerly of Lansford and an inmate in the county prison, was sentenced to serve one to 12 months in prison on a misdemeanor charge of harassment. She was arrested by Lansford police on Dec. 16, 2019. She was originally charged with strangulation, simple assault and harassment, stemming from a domestic dispute. The strangulation and assault counts were dropped in a plea deal.

Lansford police said they responded to the 300 block of East Abbott Street for what they labeled a “domestic between ex-girlfriends.”

Police said the victim told them Sanchez assaulted her and was smashing the interior of the house. Police said the victim had scratch marks on her neck and a bite mark on her right forearm.

Sanchez is currently in prison on pending charges. She is charged with bringing drugs into the prison and related counts. She is scheduled to enter a guilty plea in that case on Dec. 20.

In addition to the prison term, Nanovic ordered her to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use.

She was given credit for 30 days already spent in jail.

DUI charge

Jose Deleon, 38, of New York City, New York, was sentenced to serve 90 days to five years in the county prison on a charge of driving under the influence.

He was arrested on Feb. 8, 2017, along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township.

State police at Fern Ridge stopped Deleon, who was operating a Ford Econoline van for tinted windows. He was found to be impaired and submitted to a blood draw which showed the presence of a controlled substance.

He entered his plea in April 5, on the day he was scheduled to pick a jury to hear his case.

Nanovic also ordered he pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months and supply a DNA sample.

He will serve the 90 days on consecutive weekends of Thursday to Sunday beginning Jan. 6, 2022, at midnight.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of over $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.
