Police interviewing witnesses in Tamaqua hit-and-run

Eric Richardson, the 16-year-old Marian Catholic student hit by a car Saturday in Tamaqua is in serious condition at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest, Allentown.

Brian Downs, public information officer with Lehigh Valley Health Network, could provide no additional information Monday.

Meanwhile, Tamaqua Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating those responsible.

“We are definitely trying to find these people,” Tamaqua Police Chief Michael Hobbs said.

A supervisor with the Schuylkill County Communications Center received a call at 1:50 p.m. Saturday for a pedestrian struck at the intersection of East Broad and Laurel streets. Officer Karl Harig said a witness saw the victim in a crosswalk when hit.

Police said a white female with dark hair was seen driving a tan Subaru that struck Richardson. He was flown to the hospital with serious injuries. At that point the female, who is not the registered owner of the car, got out of the vehicle but then got back in. The passengers, both a male and white female, got out of the car and ran into the woods, police said.

Harig said the car was found around the block from the incident. The female got into the SUV, which then fled going east. A description of the SUV was not provided.

Hobbs said witnesses are being interviewed. The owner of the car isn’t being cooperative with police, he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Tamaqua Police at 570-668-5000.
