Six homes damaged in Mahanoy fire

Six homes were damaged and at least six people displaced after a fire Thursday night in Mahanoy City.

A supervisor with the Schuykill County Communications Center said the second-alarm fire was called in at 9:26 p.m. at 1017 E. Pine St.

Mahanoy City Fire Chief Dan Markiewicz said when firefighters arrived heavy fire was visible on the first floor of 1017. The fire caused “severe fire damage” to 1015 and 1019 also.

“The homes are probably gutted. They are a total loss,” he said .

A damage estimate was not available. Markiewicz does not know if anyone was home at 1017. Residents at 1015 were not home. The homeowners of 1019 were home and escaped, he said. They have insurance. Houses at 1013, an unoccupied structure, and 1021 and 1023 have smoke and water damage. He does not know if anyone was home at 1021 or 1023.

“At least six but not more than 12” people are displaced, Markiewicz said.

The Red Cross was on scene.

“The cause is still pending further investigation,” he said.

A state police fire marshal will investigate along with the police and fire department.

He said the firefighters “did a heck of a job” in containing the fire that was under control at 10:43 p.m. Personnel did overhaul and looked for hot spots until midnight. Firefighters remained on scene if needed. A Mahanoy City firefighter had an ankle injury but is OK, Markiewicz said.

Firefighters from Mahanoy City, Shenandoah, Frackville, Ryan Township, Girardville, Butler Township, Ringtown, Tamaqua, McAdoo, Pottsville and Schuykill Haven Rapid Intervention Team, and Minersville were on scene.Firefighters from Delano, Nesquehoning and Shepton-Oneida covered the borough. Hometown Fire Police assisted with traffic control.

EMS Mahanoy City, Shenandoah and Ryan Township EMS were there.

Mahanoy City Police also responded.
