Schuylkill approves transportation grants

The Schuylkill Transportation System could be getting a new bus and four shared ride vans.

The 30-foot bus, vans and facility equipment are included in the county’s fiscal year consolidated Capital Grant Application that will be submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The total request is $1,673,600, of which $600,000 is for the bus, $620,000 designated for vans and $453,600 for equipment for the new STS facility at 300 Wade Road, St. Clair.

Federal funds requested consist of $631,000, $978,456 in state money and a local match of $64,144.

A deadline for possible award was not provided.

In other business, commissioners renewed the library maintenance agreement with Thomson Reuters for a five-year term Jan. 1, 2022, through Dec. 31, 2027, with a 2% increase for each successive year of the contract. Total cost of contract is $692,868 including an initial monthly payment of $11,095. The renewal continues updates and replacement subscriptions for the West Legal Print references for the law library, the judges library and each of the judges.

In a related matter, commissioners approved a Westlaw legal research contract with Thomson Reuters. The 36-month contract starts Feb. 1, 2022, through Jan. 31, 2025. Total cost is $180,436.20 with an initial monthly amount of $4,864.71. There is a 3% increase for each successive 12-month period. Judges, judicial law clerks, orphans’ court administrator and full-time attorney’s in the district attorney’s and solicitor’s office use the resource.

Work needed at the Schuylkill County Prison was also approved. A supplemental budget appropriation of $104,777 for two projects at the prison. The one project is for fixing a leak in a wall where piping is. The second project is for a main water supply line.

Commissioners also approved a grant-in-aid application to administer pass through funds in the amount $1,767,671 for the Juvenile Justice Services in Pennsylvania. A $250,042 grant from the Juvenile Court Judges’ Commission to improve juvenile justice services in the county was also approved.

Renovations at 324 N. Centre St. for the MIS Department were approved. The following contractors were chosen: Spotts Brothers Inc., Schuylkill Haven $59,327 for general construction, Shannon A. Smith Electrical & Mechanical $27,0000 and Antz Energy Systems $29,970 for mechanical.

A professional engineering services agreement with Alfred Benesch and Company was amended for the airport road restoration project, increasing the amount by $5,600 for a total cost of $95,800 because of design changes to the airport parking lot.

Vivan Rupert was hired to deliver election machines to replace Thomas Kurtek. The rate of pay is $290.
