Pair from New Jersey charged with passing counterfeit bills at Walmart

Two New Jersey men have been charged with passing counterfeit bills at the Walmart in Mahoning Township.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Tyler Meek of the Mahoning Township Police Department in the case against Davonte Nock:

At 3:27 p.m. Sept. 6, township police Chief Audie Mertz received a call from Walmart Asset Protection reporting a man had just passed a counterfeit $50 bill and was walking down the driveway toward Route 443.

Meek located the man, identified as Ronald Burrell, 35, also of Trenton.

Burrell had 15 counterfeit $20 bills; 14 counterfeit $50 bills.

He also had the purchased item and a receipt for the transaction. Asset Protection recovered the $50 bill Burrell used to make the purchase in the amount of $42.28 at the store that day.

At 3:44 p.m., Mertz was notified that a second man was inside the store at the electronics counter attempting to make a purchase and advised that this man had passed counterfeit bills the night before at the store.

He was identified by two employees. Mertz and Lehighton Borough police officer Gabe Szozda located and detained the man, identified as Nock, 28, of Trenton.

Nock had two counterfeit $20 bills; 24 counterfeit $50 bills.

On Sept. 5 at 8:48 p.m., Nock completed a purchase of merchandise in the amount of $606 using $650 in counterfeit bills.

Nock then completed a second transaction at 8:51 p.m. in the amount of $105.95 using $120 in counterfeit bills.

All of the bills were recovered from the registers and identified as nine counterfeit $50 bills, and one $20 bill.

Both men face charges of forgery and retail theft.

Both men are currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $30,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have preliminary hearings Sept. 29 before District Judge Casimir T. Kosciolek of Lansford.
