Palmerton festival: Bill Reese brings country and oldies

They play ’50s, ’60s and ’70s oldies and classic country music.

Fans of those genres of music should make it a point to watch Bill Reese’s At The Hop and Classic Country Show perform from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday in the bandstand at this year’s Palmerton Community Festival.

The band consists of Bill Reese (lead singer), Mike Strunk (lead guitar), April Rehrig (drums) and Meladye Reese (backup vocals).

This will mark the band’s first performance at the festival, which Bill Reese said should turn out well as the band is all about being upbeat and meeting new people.

“We’re excited, we’re looking forward to it,” Reese said. “We know a lot of people in the area.”

Reese said his band is scheduled to perform right in between the Large Flowerheads and the Cramer Brothers, “So we kind of fit right in, kind of a cool transition,” he said. “It will be a great night of music for everybody.”

Rehrig took it a step further.

“We perform country and oldies because that is what Bill specializes in performing, while Mike and April love country and oldies as well,” Rehrig said. “So it’s a perfect fit.”

Rehrig said the band’s favorite songs to perform are “Splish Splash” by Bobby Darin, “Oh, Pretty Woman” by Roy Orbison, and “The Cowboy Rides Away” by George Strait.

“We enjoy performing at the festival because it is welcoming, and everyone who is there wants to have a good time with smiles and laughs, and that is what we are all about,” she said. “We love playing music that our audience will enjoy and make their night.”

Reese said his band plays No. 1 hits, and does everything from Glen Campbell, to Alabama, to Dion, and perhaps even maybe an Elvis song or two.

He said his band has been playing for about a dozen years throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

“We like to have a good time, no drama, like to talk to people and mingle,” he said. “Before COVID, we were doing about 50 shows a year.”
