Red Creek Wildlife Center founder seeking donations

The founder of Red Creek Wildlife Center is requesting donations after an influx of baby animals.

“We’ve never had baby animals this late,” excluding squirrels, Peggy Hentz, founder and director of the Schuylkill Haven based center said Friday.

This November marks 30 years since Red Creek opened.

She guessed that either the litters are larger or the mothers are having them later. So far, the center has cared for 3,808 in 2021, more than the 3,722 this time in 2020.

“Most of those last year came in April, May and June at the start of COVID when most of the other centers in the state closed,” Hentz said.

As of Friday, about 800 raccoons, foxes, coyotes and other wildlife are there.

Tropical depression Ida resulted in people bringing 50 baby squirrels, 16 bunnies and 16 songbirds. A total of 108 baby squirrels are there. Average age of the bunnies is 2 to 10 days old. Hentz said the songbirds were young and starting to fly.

“Right now, we have the manpower to feed everything, but we are running really low on funds,” Hentz said.

Donations are accepted on the center’s Facebook page and website, redcreekwildlifecenter.com. Checks should be sent to 300 Moonhill Drive, Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972. The center receives 100% of donations through Facebook or checks.

A total of $1,020 has been donated via Facebook as of 8:50 p.m. Friday.

Hentz said every dollar counts.

“I thank you. The animals thank you. Our supporters are part of our team to help rescue animals. We couldn’t do it if it wasn’t for our supporters,” she said.
