Carbon takes steps for fire center

A fire training site for Carbon County emergency responders is moving forward at a potential price tag of $5.2 million.

On Thursday, the county commissioners opened bids using a new electronic bidding system, PennBid.

A total of 14 bids were received for the four contracts for the emergency operations and training center buildings at the site on the Broad Mountain in Nesquehoning.

The project, which has been in the works for several years, is ready to move forward on the phase with building a four-story, fire training tower with roof simulators and three burn rooms; as well as a two-story, observation building with attached single story police training room.

The low bids included $4,798,000 for general construction and fire protection by CMG of Easton Inc.; $298,900 for electrical work by George J. Hayden Inc., doing business as Hayden Power Group; $117,000 for plumbing by K.C. Mechanical Service Inc.; and $51,548 for HVAC and mechanical work by CHM Contracting.

The bids were then tabled for two weeks so the necessary parties, including the architect and developer, could review the bids and bid bonds.

During and after the bid opening, the county commissioners spoke about moving to PennBid and how it has helped extend the reach for projects, as well as cut costs for services such as printing sets of plans for each bidder.

“This certainly gave us an opportunity to reach out to a lot more potential bidders,” Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said. “ ... It’s streamlining the process.”

The multiuse training facility outside the Emergency Management Agency on the Broad Mountain in Nesquehoning has been in the works since 2015.

Since then, the county has been working at securing grants and completing the project in phases.
