Orwigsburg chief receives community award

Orwigsburg Police Chief Vince McDonald received an award earlier this month at the Mountain Valley Golf Course in Barnesville.

The 48-year-old was presented with the Trooper Ron Johnson Award July 17.

“It’s a huge honor to be recognized for the community service that I have done,” McDonald said.

The award is given to state police or municipal police officers who volunteer in the community. Trooper Mark Knock of the Schuylkill Haven state police presented the award to McDonald.

The chief has been involved in developing the youth of Schuylkill County by previously running the Schuylkill Haven Drug Abuse Resistance Education program. Children in second, fourth and sixth grades learn the importance of staying drug free. He was also involved in soccer, basketball and flag football while serving as an officer with the Schuylkill Haven Police Department.

Rhonda Johnson, daughter of Johnson who died in 2011, agreed McDonald is deserving of the honor. “It feels a little extra special this year,” Johnson said, adding she knows McDonald.

The fourth grade teacher in Schuylkill Haven said he is “very community oriented.”

She had both of his children in school. Her father would be proud McDonald received the award.

“My father was a great community participant,” she said.

She said her dad was instrumental in bringing Camp Cadet, a summer camp for children 12 to 15 in Berks, Lebanon and Schuylkill counties. State police and other law enforcement personnel run the camp.

“My dad was very proud of Camp Cadet,” she said.

Prior to retirement, her dad was a detective with the Schuylkill Haven state police.
