Lehighton to spend nearly $130K for concrete paving patching project on Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard

Lehighton will spend just shy of $130,000 for a concrete paving patching project.

On a 6-1 vote, borough council on Monday awarded a bid in the amount of $129,859 to Lehigh Asphalt Paving & Construction Co., Inc. for the project on Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard.

Also as part of its motion, council agreed to hold off on work on Cypress Street until 2022.

Borough Manager Nicole Beckett said council had three options to choose from:

• Award the base bid and additional work ($129,859) and hold off on Cypress Street until next year.

• Award the base work for the bypass only ($105,346) and complete Cypress Street ($26,200).

• Award the base bid and additional work ($129,859) and complete Cypress Street ($26,200), which would deplete the borough’s reserves until next year.

Councilman Ryan Saunders said he preferred that he would like to go with the Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard project, and hold off on Cypress Street until next year.

Councilman Joe Flickinger agreed, adding that initially he was in favor of doing both projects, before rethinking things and wanting to hold off on Cypress Street until next year.

However, Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky, who voted against the measure, said she believes the borough should do both projects.

Abelovsky said Cypress Street has been pushed off since 2014.

Saunders estimated Cypress sees substantially less traffic than the bypass does.

Flickinger added that council can’t just always go by lists.

After the meeting, Beckett said the work will consist of about 440 square-yards of concrete pavement patching, in addition to joint repair, inlet replacement and sidewalk replacement.

Beckett said the Cypress Street project is a full-depth reconstruction and storm inlet replacement.
