Tamaqua celebrates new, expanded liquor store

Officials celebrated the opening of a new, expanded liquor store in Tamaqua on Monday.

The Fine Wine and Good Spirits store opened July 1 in its new location at 210 Cedar St., in the same building as Boyer’s Food Markets.

The new store is about 2,000 square feet larger than the store it replaced. It will have more varieties of wine and liquor, including a section for local products.

“This is not the old state store,” said Michael Demko, executive director of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

The new products in the store were chosen based on what sold at the old store, surrounding stores, and new trends like wine in cans.

LCB officials said the new location was chosen to be more convenient for customers who are already shopping at Boyer’s. Boyer’s is in the process of remodeling and expanding the store. Mason’s Cold Beer also plans to open a location inside.

Sen. Dave Argall, R-Schuylkill, recalled that now-retired Boyer’s owner John Boyer approached him with the idea of adding a liquor store and beer store to the Tamaqua location.

“I understand that’s not a radical concept in other states, but in Pennsylvania, it’s still a bit new,” Argall said.

Argall said the project was made possible by the Tamaqua City Revitalization and Improvement Zone, and will give back to that project through the tax money it creates.

Boyer said that when the remodeled Boyer’s store is completed, some time in the coming weeks, it will have expanded offerings which compete with any store in the area.

“This community has been really good to Boyer’s, and I think this is a nice thank you to the community to have this store,” he said.
