Luzerne man sentenced to state prison on firearms charge

A Luzerne County man was sentenced to a state prison term in Carbon County court on Thursday on a firearms charge.

Jonathan Skonieczny, 38, of Hazleton, pleaded guilty before Judge Joseph J. Matika to one count of possession of a firearm without a license, a felony 3. In exchange for the plea, felony counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance along with counts of flight to avoid apprehension, resisting arrest and possession of a firearm prohibited were dropped in a plea deal with the district attorney’s office.

Skonieczny was arrested by state police at Hazleton on Dec. 8, 2020, at a residence along Poplar Street in Banks Township. Troopers went to the residence to help the U.S. Marshals Service serve a warrant for Skonieczny. He fled but was eventually taken into custody.

He is currently an inmate in the state correctional institution at Frackville. He is facing a parole violation and resentencing. He told Matika any sentence Carbon imposed will be consecutive to what the state decides. His plea was entered via video from the state prison.

Matika then sentenced him to serve 42 to 84 months in a state prison and ordered he render 100 hours of community service when paroled, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, supply a DNA sample and pay court costs of about $1,000.

He was given credit for 15 days already served on the charge.
