West Penn to begin recycling program July 1

West Penn Township will begin its recycling program on July 1.

The announcement was made at the township board of supervisors meeting Monday morning.

Supervisors plan on having the site, located at the West Penn Fire Company, open Monday through Friday, with staggered hours throughout the week.

Hours of operation will be Mondays and Tuesdays 7 a.m. to noon, Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Thursdays and Fridays 4-7 p.m.

On site, residents must display proof township residency. The township plans to have some type of personnel at the site during ours of operation throughout the initial stages of the program.

“We need somebody there. I don’t know if we need to have them there constantly, but intermittently, so they recycle properly,” added Supervisor Tim Houser. “We want recycling, but we want it done properly.”

A fence will be built around the perimeter of the recycling site in the coming weeks for further precaution.

“The cement is down, the bin is up and we’re going to be moving the recycling bin container onto the cement sometime this week,” said Tony Prudenti, West Penn board chairman.

Engineering change

The board approved a motion to request any and all information regarding Morgan Park from Lehigh Engineering regarding the Morgan Park Grant and to terminate their obligation for engineering at Morgan Park to peruse other needs.

Members of the board noted lack of communication and responsiveness from Lehigh Engineering during the process.

“I’m not happy with the professionalism and I’d like to go with the firm we presently are using today as our engineer, get their name off it, get ARRO (Engineering) onto it, so I can go right to ARRO and say bid this out, let’s get this started,” Supervisor Glenn Hummel said.

The board is eager to begin projects at Morgan Park which include installation of a well, a pole building (future bathroom) and second pavilion.
