Supporters back coach at Tamaqua board meeting

Several people spoke on half of Tamaqua head softball coach Jillian Barron at the school board meeting Tuesday night.

Some of Barron’s coaching methods were questioned during a board meeting one week earlier.

Jill’s husband, Jim Barron, addressed the complaints made about his wife.

“I’m here for both personal reasons, my wife being the coach; and also from a coach’s standpoint,” said Jim Barron, who has been coaching boys basketball for 18 years at the high school level.

“One of the first things you find out in coaching is that everyone has an opinion on what or how your team should play. It’s easy to say ‘this is how it should have been done’ after the fact,” Jim Barron said. “Another thing you find out is that no matter what you do, you’ll never please everyone.

“We are tasked with difficult decisions that are going to make people unhappy. It’s not something any coach wants to do, but it comes along with making important team decisions.”

Jim Barron, who has been in the dugout as the team’s scorekeeper during the years his wife has coached, continued, “What was said last week (at the school board meeting) crossed the line. These men and others started an agenda of having a coach removed by using a massive trigger word in school - bullying. I have never once witnessed a situation of bullying. To use this word is 100 percent inaccurate, and is meant to be vindictive.”

Jim Barron quoted Matt Lyle, a well-respected hitting coach who has worked in both college and professional levels of baseball and softball: “High school athletes: When you’re 25, you’re going to realize that the people who demanded your best were also the ones who cared about you the most.”

Three of the team players then spoke and defended coach Jill Barron. Nathan Houser, a parent of one of the girls who had complained about Jill Barron, also spoke.

School Board President Larry Wittig thanked those who spoke and said that the school board would address this issue at a another time.
