Weatherly and Packer talk fire protection

Weatherly Borough council members and Packer Township supervisors were in the same room during the regular borough council meeting on May 24.

Packer Supervisors Robert Select and Terry Davis came to talk, with Selert explaining that the proposed new contribution toward fire protection is a 68% jump from 2020’s. Selert and Davis then explained that the added cost was not budgeted for.

Packer supervisors counter-offered with increasing the payments this year and next, to reach the asked-for level in the third year of the agreement. Weatherly council members Norm Richie, Joe Thomas and Joe Cyburt feel strongly that everyone should pay the same.

Through recent years, Packer residents paid in significantly less per property than Weatherly residents. It was decided to meet at Packer’s municipal building on May 27 to try to work things out.

The former Weatherly train station that was recently the borough office building will again be advertised for sale. Bids are being sought. Also up for bids will be two vacant lots on Hudsondale Street where homes were torn down last year.

Council approved an update to the electric services ordinance - which among several things allows solar panels and backup generators. Council also agreed to delete from the abandoned and unlicensed vehicles ordinance a section that is obsolete.

Daily fees for swimming at Eurana Park remain at $2 a person. A season pass, like the tags that were offered in years past, was suggested, and not charging children aged 5 and under. Discussion on fees will continue. Swimming in the park will likely begin either the second or third week in June.

The spring Weatherly Hill Climb June 12 and 13 had been in jeopardy due to a change in Pennsylvania Department of Transportation rules making the event fully liable for activities on the roads. With the change, Weatherly Borough could become liable on their stretch of the event’s roads. So would Lehigh and Lausanne townships. The Hill Climb Association contacted their insurance carrier to put riders in place to cover the borough and townships (that insurance is now in place).
