Trees, recreation, code enforcement on topic at Weissport meeting

A number of issues were discussed at the recent Weissport Borough Council meeting.

Fred Kemmerer, a local arborist who had offered to analyze the borough park, presented his findings at the meeting. Kemmerer did a tour of the park and identified five trees that would need to be removed and 14 that need to have dead branches removed and be thinned out.

Another five trees that PPL trimmed badly would need to be trimmed, but could be saved. For the five trees that need to be removed, the council will determine what types of trees to put in their place.

Council will be accepting proposals for the work that needs to be done. Interested companies can contact the borough office.

Borough council President Arland Moyer advised the council that the park should be sprayed for insects. He mentioned that Duane Masenheimer would be able to do the work for $150 per spray session, and the spray should last three to four weeks, depending on rain. The park should be sprayed once a month for June, July and August. Council did not vote on it and will look at it at the next meeting.

Event committee

The new recreation committee has officially chosen the name, “Weissport Event Committee.” The committee met and discussed various events to hold for the borough. They are looking to hold two yard sales, the first possibly around the beginning of July.

The new committee will meet the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the borough hall. Anyone interested in volunteering on the committee should attend the meetings. The council voted to transfer $250 to the new committee’s checking account to help get them started.

Line painter purchase

Mayor Paulette Watson asked about the borough painting lines on Bridge Street. To that end, Moyer recommended the borough purchase a line painter.

There were two that were possible: a Graco Line Laser 3400 that costs $3,975, and a Powerline 3500 that costs $4,075.

Council members voted to purchase the Graco line painter.

Code enforcement

Greg Kurtz, who serves the Borough of Tamaqua as code enforcer, was on hand to answer questions for Weissport council as they seek to bring in someone to help with code enforcement.

Kurtz recommended the borough hire someone to serve part time, and he would be willing to train the person. Weissport especially needs help in issuing permits and enforcing the permits already granted.

Kurtz would help the borough with building inspections and other code and zoning issues.
