Nesquehoning council

Nesquehoning Borough Council acted on or discussed the following items during its monthly meeting last week.

• Resident Mike Deganich of West Columbus Avenue, New Columbus, brought his concerns about drainage issues along Musmano Avenue, noting that the drainage pipe was crushed years ago and it was never replaced.

He said that it is an issue because a marsh forms when it rains.

Council said that it will look into the matter.

• Deganich also asked council what they are going to do about a 130-year-old active water main that runs under several properties by his house. He said that if there is a “catastrophic failure” of that line, his home, as well as other residents’ homes, will be greatly affected.

Council told him that this issue is not under the borough council’s authority, and directed him to the Nesquehoning Water Authority, which meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month.

• Resident Cory Dzienis asked council if something can be done about the speeding along West Railroad Street. He said that it is a hazard since there is a park and children are riding bicycles or playing in the area.

• Solicitor Robert Yurchak said that the Supreme Court said that temporary rentals, unless they are specifically allowed, are not allowed in residential areas. He noted that they would have to ask for a use variance.

“We don’t have to do anything to our ordinance, they are just not permitted,” Yurchak said.

• Accepted the resignation of Martin Ksepka as a part-time police officer.

• Street sweeping will take place later this month. Specific dates and a schedule will be announced closer to time.

• Approved purchasing a Simpson Clean Machine electric power washer for the police department from Tractor Supply.

• The police department received a donation from the Zapraznys in the amount of $500. Some of the money will be used for the pressure washer purchase.

• Councilman Michael Radocha commended the Nesquehoning fire companies on a recent call. He said they did a “tremendous job.”

• Mayor Sam Kitchko read the police report for the month of March. During the month, $3,865.39 was collected, 71 citations were issued, 417 incidents were reported and police drove 3,465 on patrol.

• Nesquehoning Hose Company Fire Chief John McArdle asked council to waive any permit fees associated with the borough regarding the fire company’s expansion project. Carbon Engineering will be overseeing the project.

More discussion is needed on this matter.

• Approved a motion to purchase an Exmark Radius E-Series lawn mower for the borough crew.
