Three people are displaced after a cooking accident in East Penn Township, Carbon County, that caused $100,000 in damage.

The East Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company responded to 885 E. Lizard Creek Road at 1:40 p.m. for a working kitchen fire. The homeowners, who Fire Chief Robert Kleintop didn’t name, were outside at the time. An older son was not home, he said.

Kleintop said they screamed at a neighbor to call 911 after they looked at the home and the kitchen was on fire. Their phone was inside.

“The kitchen fire extended into the attic,” Kleintop said.

The rest of the home had smoke damage, he said.

Firefighters contained the blaze in 30 minutes. The homeowners do have insurance. They are staying with friends. The cause is cooking related, Kleintop said.

The scene was cleared at 3:50 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Responding were the American Red Cross, and fire companies from Bowmanstown, Franklin Township, Parryville, Palmerton, Lower Towamensing Township, and ambulances from Lehighton, Palmerton. The Mahoning Valley Ambulance and Rehab was there to provide water and rehab for firefighters who needed it because of the heat. It was originally reported that someone might have smoke inhalation thus the number of ambulances, he said.
