Local roundup: Results from April 16

The Northwestern baseball team handed Notre Dame Green Pond its first loss of the season Friday.

NDGP-Northwestern

Northwestern posted an impressive 11-1 win over Notre Dame Green Pond in a showdown of two of the Colonial League’s top teams.

Justin Holmes was 2-for-3 with three RBIs a walk and a run scored for the Tigers (9-0), who exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Carter Welch added two hits, drove in two and walked three times.

Welch was dominant on the mound, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out nine in six innings of work.

Jackson Shollenberger had a double in the top of the sixth for the Crusaders (8-1) to break up Welch’s no-hitter.

PM West-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley turned back a seventh inning rally by Pocono Mountain West to claim an 11-9 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win.

Andrew Meitzler (two RBIs, run scored) and Zach Walters (RBI, run scored) had two hits apiece for the Bears (6-1), who led 11-2 entering the top of the seventh. Dominic Payan added a home run and scored three runs, while Brandon Ratti doubled and scored twice.

JD Greeley had a triple and home run for the Panthers (3-4), driving in four runs.

Pine Grove-Lehighton

Pine Grove pulled away from Lehighton for a 9-1 victory in Schuylkill League action.

Donovan Copeland (RBI), Josh Leininger (RBI) and Jacob Strubhar all had hits for the Cardinals (6-3).

Branden Kocher had a double and an RBI for the Tribe (1-6). Randy Bongiorno and Ian Rarick also had hits.

Pen Argyl-Northern Lehigh

Pen Argyl surged past Northern Lehigh for a 19-5 Colonial League win.

Gavin Pritchard had three hits, including a triple, and drove in four runs for the Green Knights (2-5).

Cole Hausman had a hit and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (0-8). Ryan Hammond, Jack Tosh and Brett Misera also had hits.

SOFTBALL

Palmerton-Kutztown

Megan Green’s home run in the top of the ninth inning lifted Palmerton to an 11-10 non-league win over Kutztown.

Green, who also hit a go-ahead homer in extra innings against Notre Dame on Wednesday, finished 2-for-6 with a double and three RBIs for the Bombers (8-1). Yessi Olewine was 4-for-5 with two doubles. Megan Serfass and Carly Gaffney both had three hits and drove in two runs.

Emily Baumgardt also collected three hits in the win.

Pine Grove-Lehighton

Makenzie Daubert had a big day at the plate and Pine Grove cruised to a 22-7 Schuylkill League win over Lehighton.

Daubert was 4-for-5 with six RBIs and a run scored for the Cardinals (6-3). Emily Fisher (two RBIs, three runs scored), Lillian Barra (double, RBI, three runs scored), Megan Wolfe (RBI, run scored) and Bailley Dorson (run scored) all had multiple hits in the win. Faith Wolff also had a hit and drove in four runs.

Cheyenne Whiteman was 3-for-3 with double, RBI and a run scored for the Indians (2-4). Mia Snyder also had a double and three RBIs. Maggie Pagotto (RBI, two runs scored), Kendra Peterman, Mallory Valentine (run scored), Anna Laible and Abbie Miller also had hits,
