Special meeting Tuesday to discuss Bike Night in Bowmanstown

A special meeting will be held to determine what roads will be closed to accommodate Bowmanstown Bike Night this fall.

Cheryl Frey and Judy Hoffman, representing Emmanuel United Church of Christ, expressed concerns to borough council on Tuesday about the event.

Hosted by Rodrigues Bike Event, Bike Night will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 25 from the Bowmanstown Volunteer Fire Company. The rain date is Sept. 26.

“We understand the road is being closed and we have an event that day that we need to get to the church,” Frey said.

The current plan is to shut down Hamilton Street from Fireline Road to Lime Street, close Lime Street from Ore Street to Green Street, and then what would continue around the camp grove would be Mill Street from Hamilton Street to Ore Street, and Ore Street from Mill Street to Lime Street.

It was stated that Hamilton Street would be the better street to close down due to the potholes on Ore Street, as well as being a way to regulate the bikes from coming into town.

Mayor Zach Snyder said that while it may not always be the most ideal, there is plenty of parking that exists throughout the borough.

“There is ample parking in town,” he said. “This is a Bike Night for eight hours.”

Snyder said he believes the event will be quite the attraction.

“It’s also a situation where we need to draw people into town,” he said. “I think this is a great event.”

Frey and Hoffman then asked what will happen to their pickup fundraiser that is scheduled to be held on Sept. 25. The church is located on Hamilton Street.

Additionally, as a church, they said they could be called upon to have a funeral service that day.

Snyder said there would still be access to the church.

“The funeral could also be held earlier in the day,” Snyder said. “If it came down to something like that, that is not an issue.”

Hoffman questioned why the church wasn’t notified of this previously.

However, Councilwoman Candace Rodrigues disagreed.

“You were well aware of the event,” Rodrigues said. “No matter what, it’s going to be an inconvenience for someone.”

Snyder agreed, adding, “No matter what event’s held in town, unfortunately, there’s an inconvenience.”

Councilman Rob Moyer suggested it was actually a good problem to have.

“It’s a positive thing,” Moyer said. “We just need to work it out.”

Resident Joe Rodrigues said that at least 150-200 bikes would be in attendance, and that there would likely be more throughout the day.

Council agreed to hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday to determine what streets would be closed down for the event.
