Community rallies around victims of fire

The fatal March 15 fire in Lansford brought together residents from Lansford and beyond, not just to show sympathy, but also to help the families get back on their feet.

Businesses and neighbors have been busy collecting money and clothing donations for the fire victims.

Three families lost all their possessions when the fire broke out that afternoon. One of them lost a father.

There have been online fundraisers set up for each of the three families affected by the blaze.

Relatives of Jonathan Honey, the man who died in the fire, said the donations have been greatly appreciated.

“I am deeply saddened and devastated that he is no longer with us, but his memory will never fade. We are all so grateful that everyone is helping to give his wife and children a good start on rebuilding their future,” said Tanya Knepper.

Honey died after going back in to help his family escape the blaze. His wife, Kierstyn, is still hospitalized and faces a long recovery from her injuries.

Their three children have been released from the hospital and are currently staying with family members.

Thousands have been donated to a pair of GoFundMe sites set up to help get the family back on their feet. The fundraisers are available at https://gofund.me/ac0172ca and https://gofund.me/f2e7c790.

Kierstyn Honey’s mother, Deanna Barlip, said the donations have been appreciated. It will go toward finding accessible housing for Honey when she is released from the hospital, and purchasing any needed items that haven’t been donated for her sons.

Honey fractured her neck, back and pelvis when she jumped from the second floor of the building to escape the fire. She will have to relearn to walk.

“She is a strong woman and wonderful mother, she hasn’t been able to see her boys since the fire except for FaceTiming, which has been very difficult to handle along with the loss of her husband,” Barlip said.

Relatives of Colleen and Joe Serfass, who lost their home and all their possessions to the fire, have set up another fundraiser, which has raised over $4,000.

The third family displaced by the fire, Robert and Chelsea Sweeney and their three children, lost all of their belongings as well.

Their story touched a stranger, Breanna Card, who decided to set up a GoFundMe to help them rebuild. Card said that her fundraiser has the full support of the Sweeney family. The fundraiser, which is available at https://gofund.me/d07fe1a2, raised $1,045 as of Friday afternoon.

Lansford resident Jennifer Staines has been organizing a clothing drive for all of the families affected by the fire. St. Gabriel Italian Club in Summit Hill is also accepting clothing donations.

Staines said that the amount of donations from the community has been amazing.

“People are really digging deep and helping,” Staines said.

On her Facebook page, which is the same as her name, she has posted lists with clothing sizes and suggestions for toy donations for the children of the families displaced in the fire.

Staines said that the donations have been so plentiful that she’s currently looking for a storage cube to protect them from weather until the families are ready to receive them.

Staines has been collecting items for the victims of previous fires for several months, as they continue to recover. And she said she’ll do the same for the families affected by the March 15 fire.

“It means a lot to me to see them getting back on their feet,” she said.
