Tamaqua woman admits to drinking before crash

A Tamaqua woman admitted she was drinking before she got behind the wheel and crashed.

West Penn Township Police say Colleen Coscio smelled of alcohol while talking to police after the Oct. 4 incident near the South Tamaqua Plaza.

“I took two pills from my prescription medication for my anxiety and had two shots of alcohol earlier. I think I fell asleep while driving,” she told police, according to the affidavit.

She was arrested at the scene.

Police responded to the West Penn Pike location for an accident with injuries. Upon arrival, witnesses told police they saw the crash. A silver sedan and a Jeep were nearby.

Ambulance personnel attended to the driver of the car who was taken to St. Luke’s Miners Campus.

Witnesses said they noticed the Jeep hit the car. A man said the Jeep “narrowly” avoided several cars before hitting the silver one. He checked on the Jeep’s driver and said she “appeared disoriented if not outright intoxicated.”

A woman said the Jeep almost hit her vehicle head-on. She saw the Jeep hit the car.

A blood test was done on Coscio that later determined her blood alcohol content was 0.095, and showed signs of marijuana use.

She is charged with DUI-General Impairment and DUI-General Impairment/incapable of driving safely, DUI-Controlled Substance, combination alcohol or drugs first offense and reckless driving.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for noon Tuesday in Magisterial District Judge James Ferrier’s office.
