Man charged with assault of Tamaqua chief

A Tamaqua man was jailed last week after he was involved in an incident at his apartment house and then assaulting the police chief.

Borough police said officers were dispatched to the 300 block of W. Broad Street, on March 18 at 7:50 a.m. for a report of a male out of control. On scene officers were told by a resident of the apartment building that resident Malik X. Zver, 21, of Apt. 3, was the man out of control.

Police attempted to enter the building but Zver, who was inside the door, locked it. After a time he unlocked the door and police entered. Police said Zver appeared to be under the influence of something. Police began to speak to him when he began banging on the door an apartment.

A woman answered holding a baby and Zver began to scream at her. At this point police placed Zver under arrest for disorderly conduct.

As police were taking him from the building he began to resist arrest. After getting him under control police attempted to place him in a police cruiser and he resisted again. Police eventually got him in the car and took him to the station.

At the station police officers took him to a holding cell and uncuffed him. He was told to take off his shoes and enter the cell. At this point he threw an elbow at Chief Michael Hobbs striking him in the face. Zver was then taken to the ground and placed back in handcuffs. Zver was placed in the cell.

Hobbs went to the hospital for a broken nose.

Zver was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct and two counts of harassment. He was arraigned before District Judge Stephen Bayer of Tamaqua and bail was set at $50,000. Zver was unable to post bail and was committed to the county prison in Pottsville.
