Fundraisers planned for Polk Twp. veterans memorial

Polk Township Veterans Memorial Commission is looking at fundraisers to fix the memorial on the corner of Trach Road and Route 209.

Candy Burger, a representative for the Polk veterans commission, brought the supervisors up to date Wednesday night on the fundraising possibilities to raise money for the memorial project.

“We have been talking to a Nate Strohl and he is coming back to us with prices and some items we can look at as fundraisers,” she said.

Some of the other items for fundraising that Burger suggested were a stainless-steel coffee mug engraved with the words Polk Veterans Memorial, a can opener that is also engraved like the mug, and a soldier ornament.

“We are also looking at silhouettes, too, because he can make different things, so at our next meeting he’s going to show us and give us pricing and stuff like and what we could probably charge,” she said.

Burger also said, “Letters will go out to businesses in hopes that some would want to know what we’re doing and we can get some donations.”

Fixing the memorial

The base of the flag is broken and the light that is facing closest to Route 209, the light in the memorial, is broken, Burger said.

She also said the memorial could use a good cleaning and some of the grout is coming out.

“I don’t know but maybe it could be power washed or whatever they do to clean it,” she said, and added that was all she had to report.

The supervisors said they would address the issues of the memorial.

In other business

• The supervisors approved the hiring of Melissann Frantz-Monaco for the position of part-time secretary. To start she will work three days a week, but that may be adjusted if the workload changes.

• The secretary reported the Mill Pond Road bridge replacement has a tentative start of March 1.

• A meeting is scheduled with the forester for March 29 concerning the trees that need to be removed from the walking park because they were identified as a falling hazard.
