Pace-Makers host annual car show to benefit area youth
The roar of the engines means one thing ... the 37th Annual Pace-Makers Association Car Show was back at the Palmerton Borough Park on Saturday. The show is traditionally held every year on the Saturday before Father’s Day.
Pace-Makers, which stands for “Palmerton Area Car Enthusiasts, Money Achieved for Kids Engaged in Recreation and Sports,” brings out the best cars, trucks, SUVs and motorcycles to the park.
“We have about 200 vehicles, so far,” said Andrew Cordell, president of the Pace-Makers Association. “It’s excellent weather; the best we’ve had.”
The weather was perfect this year, bringing out a wide range of cars and trucks from the 1900s through the 2000s.
Gary Warmkessel from Slatington brought his 1965 Chevrolet Corvette.
“I bought it years ago,” Warmkessel explained. “It wasn’t in this condition; it was a big mess. It took several years to fully restore it, about three years.
The classic car was back on the road in 2010.
Dave Kolek brought a 1950 Pontiac Station Wagon that was completely original. He did not need to do any restoration on it since purchasing it in 2020.
“I wanted a woody wagon for years and years until I found one in my price range that I could afford,” Kolek explained. “It’s all original; this is how I got it. It’s all stock yet. It’s a flat head eight in a six volt system.”
Beth McCarty of Easton brought “Smoke,” a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, that has a very special background.
“It’s a military/police/first responder tribute car,” McCarty said. “There are over 1,700 signatures all over the car from the military, active and veterans, and special in-memory-of signatures.”
This is the ninth year that Smoke has appeared in car shows, and was first started by Bob and Beth McCarty. In 2018, they had the wrap (decoration) put on it. At first, Bob McCarty only had Marines sign the car, having served in the Marines himself.
“September 2018 was our first show,” McCarty explained. “In October 2018, (Bob) got the first signature in the car. He passed away in 2019, and I kept on going with this.”
In addition to the car show, Dale’s Concessions had several food trailers there, plus a basket auction, a deejay, and prizes.
“All the money we raise goes to local youth organizations within a three-mile radius from the borough of Palmerton. So far, we have raised over $114,000 for area youth.”
