A motorist was nearly struck head-on by a vehicle that looked like an unmarked police SUV in Nesquehoning over the weekend.

Nesquehoning police Chief Sean Smith warned residents that police received a report on Feb. 19 that a police vehicle with lights activated almost struck them as it attempted to pass a tractor-trailer along Route 54 in the village of Hauto.

The caller said they were able to stop in time to avoid a collision with the police vehicle, which was described as black SUV with red and blue light bar.

According to police, the vehicle in question was traveling west when it passed the truck and almost struck the caller, who was traveling east.

Police said the caller thought it was one of Nesquehoning’s officers, but patrolman Carl Breiner said it was not since he was the only one on duty at the time of the incident.

Police also checked with Schuylkill and Carbon communications centers, and Frackville and Hazleton State Police and no official police vehicles should have been in that area at that time.
