Nesquehoning council: Rec center to remain closed

Nesquehoning is making sure its employees stay safe during the pandemic.

Last week, borough council announced that the recreation center, which has been closed since last spring due to the pandemic, will remain closed for public use until further notice.

Council President David Hawk said the decision was an extension of council’s earlier policy that no rentals or bingos would be held during the pandemic.

“This is simply a continuation of that decision,” he said. “The Recreation Commission was hoping to begin rentals again in April. Council is erring on the side of caution in keeping it closed due to the continuing pandemic, the emerging COVID-19 strains which are potentially more contagious, the slower than hoped for distribution of vaccines, and the inability to reasonably enforce prevention protocols (masks, distancing, etc.) within the borough owned building during rental events.”

The recreation center, in the event of an emergency, will continue to be utilized as one of the borough’s designated emergency shelters, Hawk noted.

The borough offices are also closed to the public at this time.

Until further notice, residents are asked to use the drop box at the entrance of the building, mail, ACH transfers or online payment to pay borough bills.

If business needs to be conducted in person with one of the employees, residents should call ahead and schedule an appointment.

“We are still here from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday,” RoniSue Ahner, borough secretary-treasurer, said.
