Wood stove causes fire, damages Ross Township house

Approximately 40 firefighters from three Monroe County departments quickly fought a residential fire and rescued a pet dog late Saturday afternoon.

A wood stove in the basement of 201 High Point Drive is to blame for a fire that burnt through to the first floor, where the dining room is.

“The fire damage is minimal, but there was a lot of smoke damage. You could write your name in the soot on the walls,” Leon Clapper, fire chief of Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder Fire Company, said Sunday.

Timing was everything, he said.

The two residents were away when the fire started but must have returned only minutes later. They saw smoke and so had their neighbor. They called 911.

“It was good timing on everyone’s part,” Clapper said of the dispatch call he received around 5 p.m. “West End had guys at their station, and so did Polk when I called for their help.”

With firefighters en route, the residents were outside looking for their two dogs, according to reports.

“The one dog got outside OK. The other one was trapped in the dining room. Firefighters searched and found the dog alive,” Clapper said.

Firefighters used water from two tankers since there are no natural water sources or hydrants in the neighborhood. They hauled the hose into the dining room and quickly extinguished the flames, he said.

“Once the house is cleaned up and the wiring is fixed, the residents can return,” he said.

The Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing and other needs.

“It is such a great organization and always there to help,” he said.

West End Community Ambulance was also dispatched, but no one was injured. Firefighters were on scene about 90 minutes.
