Weatherly alumni association suing former president

The alumni association for Weatherly Area High School is suing its former president who misused a credit card he illegally obtained in the organization’s name.

A lawsuit filed in magisterial district court last week names Todd A. Gimbi, the former president of the Weatherly Area High School Alumni Association.

According to the suit, Gimbi charged $11,812 in personal expenses to a credit card he took out jointly in his name and the organization’s. According to court records, Gimbi was charged with using the card 155 times between December 2018 and June 2019.

Association officials didn’t know about the card’s existence until the bank contacted them to say that it was in default, and association funds were used to cover the balance.

Some of the expenses included baseball tickets, hotel rooms, plane tickets, car rentals, hair restoration, cash advances and restaurants.

Weatherly Police charged Gimbi with forgery, access device fraud and unauthorized use and deceitful business practices last May.

In July, Gimbi pleaded guilty to forgery in the case. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped the other charges.

He served 43 days in prison. His sentence also required him to pay back the amount charged to the card. Court documents show that Gimbi has been making $150 monthly payments toward the amount he owes the court and the association.

The Alumni Association’s lawyer said that the suit ensures that the organization has taken all steps to recover the funds.

“The alumni board just wants to do all they can to collect the lost funds, and make sure they get paid back,” attorney Jane S. Sebelin said.

During the police investigation of the case, the alumni association board announced it had cut ties with Gimbi.

The saga did not prevent the organization from its annual scholarship awards. Members of the Class of 2020 received scholarships of $15,000, $4,000, $2,500, $1,000 and $500.

“They wanted to make sure that this crime by Mr. Gimbi did not interfere with awarding scholarships to Weatherly students,” Sebelin said.

A hearing in the suit is scheduled for Feb. 17 at 1:35 p.m. before Magisterial District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. in Weatherly.
