A look back: Jan. 19, 1980

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation opened a new photo license center yesterday in Carbon County, offering licensed drivers the opportunity to obtain their new cards without having to leave the area.

The center is located at the PennDOT garage in Lehighton, where Russell Jacoby and Paul Flickinger are employed as the photographers and processors.

The center is equipped with a Dek-Electro system that was designed by the company to meet state specifications. The company services 23 of the 43 states which presently require photographs on drivers’ licenses.

The first person to turn up for the new license was Ruth Kerling of Lehighton.
