2 charged with stealing $120K, guns, sports memorabilia

Two men have been charged with stealing a large amount of cash, guns, sports memorabilia, toys and jewelry from a home in McAdoo.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by trooper Peter Conforti of the Pennsylvania State Police Frackville barracks:

A man and his mother contacted police to report a burglary on South Kennedy Drive in McAdoo.

The woman told police she went to her son’s house for Christmas from Dec. 20-26. On the morning of Dec. 26 a neighbor contacted her to say a door was open to the house.

They went to the house and saw the back door was pried open.

Multiple items were missing, including the son’s trading cards, multiple BB guns and two .22 Remington rifles. The mother said she was missing multiple pieces of jewelry.

The safe in the basement was pried open and emptied. The son said there had been about $120,000 in cash, which was taken.

On the morning of Dec. 27, a woman told police her brother, Robert Card, 57, of McAdoo, could be a suspect because he knows the layout of the residence.

She said Card had done work for the mother on multiple occasions. She said she believed Card was staying in Hazleton City, with her cousin, Brian Durant, 43.

On Dec. 28, troopers went to Durant’s home. Card and Durant invited troopers inside the residence. Conforti observed a photograph autographed by a St. Louis Cardinals baseball player on a table next to the couch in the front of the residence.

Conforti called the victim, who described the photograph and confirmed that it was his.

Card admitted stealing the items. Durant said that on either Dec. 25 or 26, he was with his cousin, Card, and that Card drove his father’s blue Hyundai Sonata to the area of his sisters’ residence in McAdoo. Durant said he remained in the car and slept until Card returned about 25 minutes later, and they returned to his residence in Hazleton.

Durant denied participating in a burglary and any knowledge of one occurring involving Card.

Conforti then interviewed Card, who said he was living with his sister and was aware the victim was going to be away over Christmas because she asked his sister to get her mail.

On Dec. 22, Card said he used a hammer and broke the rear doorknob of the home in the 400 block of South Kennedy Drive and unscrewed motion lights. On either Dec. 25 or 26, he returned to the residence with Durant, and they entered through the rear door and went into the basement.

Police found four black trash bags containing old toys dumped on Tresckow Road

Durant faces charges on two counts each of burglary and receiving stolen property; along with one count of loitering and prowling at night time. Card faces charges on two counts each of burglary and receiving stolen property; along with one count each of loitering and prowling at night time, criminal mischief and possessing instrument of crime with intent.

Both are currently incarcerated in the Schuylkill County Prison, Durant in lieu of $50,000, 10%, monetary bail, and Card in lieu of $50,000 monetary bail. Both are scheduled to have preliminary hearings March 9 before District Judge Stephen J. Bayer of Tamaqua.
