Palmerton, Lehighton report COVID-19 cases

Two area school districts reported additional COVID-19 positive tests on Thursday.

In Lehighton, an individual at the middle school, who was last in attendance on Oct. 23, tested positive.

“The Pennsylvania Department of Health (PA DOH) and school district administration will continue to monitor this and any other situation that arises in relation to COVID-19,” Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver wrote in a letter sent home to families. “As outlined in our district health/safety plan, the Department of Health is responsible for all contact tracing and school district administration will assist our public health officials with this endeavor. As it relates to this situation, no students or staffs have been identified to be in close contact with the individual.”

Department of Health officials have determined there is no need, at this time, to close any of Lehighton’s buildings for students or staff, and school will remain open as scheduled.

A Palmerton Junior High School student also tested positive for COVID-19.

According to Superintendent Dr. Jodi Frankelli, the student began quarantining on Monday because of an immediate family member’s positive COVID-19 test.

“With this case and any that arise in the future, the administrative team and I will continue to rely on the guidance and advice of the Department of Health,” Frankelli said. “We will assist our public health officials with any and all efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19.”

The case in Lehighton was the second positive test for the district this year, with the other coming from an individual at the high school.

Palmerton has had multiple individuals test positive including two junior high school students, two high school students, an S.S. Palmer Elementary student and a junior high school cafeteria employee.
