Lehigh coroner: Woman, child killed in 1-78 crash

State police at Fogelsville have released details in a double fatal crash that happened on Interstate 78 eastbound at mile marker 59.5, Upper Saucon Township, Lehigh County.

Troopers from the Fogelsville barracks were dispatched to a report of a 2-vehicle crash involving a van and commercial motor vehicle with entrapment on I-78 Eastbound at 6:25 a.m. It was determined that a 2017 Freightliner diesel tractor with 2018 Hyundai semi-trailer was stopped on the right shoulder of I-78 with its emergency flashers activated and its driver out of the vehicle. A 2000 Chevrolet Express work van was traveling eastbound, and left the travel lanes, drove onto the shoulder and hit the left rear portion of the trailer of the Freightliner.

As a result of this impact, both the driver of the 32-year-old woman and the front passenger, a 6-year-old girl sustained fatal injuries. The identities of both the operator and passenger are being withheld pending next of kin notifications.

Assisting on scene were the following: Troop M Fogelsville Patrol, Troop M Collision Accident Reconstruction Unit, Troop M Forensic Services Unit, Lehigh County Coroner’s Office, Upper Saucon Fire Department, Upper Saucon EMS, Lehigh County Fire Police, Hauser’s Towing, Yocum’s Towing and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation.
