Bowmanstown council reviews 2021 spending plan

Bowmanstown is working on its budget for 2021 and is hoping to keep taxes level.

Borough council held a special budget meeting on Tuesday.

Councilman Rob Moyer highlighted some of the changes reflected in the working document which is still a good deal away from finalization.

Council President William Ravert cautioned that the figures are merely a starting point for council to work with.

“The budget is just an estimate, not a cut-and-dry figure,” Ravert said. “It’s just a guesstimate of what you plan to spend.”

Councilwoman Kara Scott asked whether council planned to budget for a chipper due to a large brush pile.

A compost pile through the state Department of Environmental Protection was started up behind the borough garage for residents to drop items such as branches and leaves off and compost them.

However, Councilman Darren Thomas noted that isn’t all that’s being dropped off and had led to it piling up.

Moyer suggested that council get a quote for a chipper.

Scott said she believes something needs to be done sooner rather than later.

“I worry that that is a fire hazard,” she said. “Every year, we put it off to the next year.”

Council agreed to hold its next budget meeting at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3, election night.

In December, council adopted this year’s budget with no tax increase.

The borough’s current millage rate is 13.005 mills.
