Lehighton’s ‘Big 3’ come up big

They’re Lehighton’s Big 3.

And on Friday night, they turned in a Big performance.

Quarterback Richard Fronheiser and his top two receivers, Zack Hunsicker and Hunter Crum, led an offensive explosion that resulted in a 60-42 victory over Schuylkill Haven.

The Indians collected over 600 yards of offense, including 398 through the air, to even their season record at 2-2.

“Our receivers can certainly do some things with the ball in their hands,” said Lehighton head coach Tom McCarroll. “It’s been part of our game plan, but the last couple weeks haven’t been as effective as we would have wanted to be ... We need our play makers to make plays, and our role players to come up big in spots, and I thought we did that pretty well tonight.

“I talked to Richard about throwing a catchable ball to those guys. They have a huge catch radius. They both play basketball, they have big bodies, they’re very athletic, and they can make plays after they catch the ball. Anyone that faces them is going to have a challenge on their hands ... They’re as good a trio as you’re going to find right now. So when we’re clicking, I think we’re tough to beat.”

The Hurricanes found that out right from the start.

On the first play from scrimmage, Fronheiser connected with Hunsicker for an 80-yard touchdown pass. Following a three-and-out by Haven, the two hooked up for a 13-yard scoring toss that made it 13-0.

“It was huge getting the win,” said Hunsicker, who caught seven passes for 185 yards. “We had a bad game last week, and we just had to come out and get another big win.

“We’re missing some guys on the line, so we tried to go outside. We have some good guys outside like Crummy and (Branden) Kocher, so we were pretty confident out there today.”

While McCarroll was more than happy with the offensive output, what he especially liked was how his team faced some rough patches.

After the quick start, Haven responded with a pair of touchdowns to trim the margin to 13-12.

But a pair of scoring passes to Crum, including one where the ball was tipped and he adjusted to make the catch, and a 4-yard TD run by Fronheiser, which was set up by Hunsicker’s 43-yard reception, made it 33-12.

“That was a situation where the kids got challenged and faced adversity,” said McCarroll. “You never know how they’re going to respond, so I was looking to see that. And I’m proud how they faced that adversity. We’re going to need that, because it doesn’t get any easier after this.”

Crum came up big again right before the half.

The Hurricanes, who were set to receive the ball to start the third quarter, punched in a score on a 23-yard pass to Conner Goehring with eight seconds left until the break to cut the margin to 33-19 and gain some momentum.

But Crum picked up the ensuing kickoff and worked his way down the field for a 76-yard touchdown return as time expired.

“It’s about momentum,” said McCarroll. “And a couple times, we gave them momentum. But our kids responded and took it right back.”

Goehring brought Haven within 40-26 on an impressive 56-yard run, but once again the Indians didn’t cave to the moment. Instead, they answered.

Fronheiser threw completions to Kocher, Crum and Hunsicker to set up Chance Neeb’s 1-yard TD run. Moments later, a Hurricanes fumble resulted in another Lehighton tally. JJ McDowell broke free for a 26-yard scamper, which led to his 5-yard run to the end zone, making the score 54-26.

“They made some plays,” said Haven mentor Mike Farr. “They caught us out of alignment, and they made some athletic plays.”

Steven Fritzinger closed out the Indians’ scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter, getting free for a 51-yard TD run.

“A win’s always good,” said McCarroll. “A win is never bad. But there was a lot we can work on, and we need to work on. And that’s from the first group all the way down.

“When you have a game like this where you do a lot of things really, really good, it’s still productive that we can walk out of this still with a handful of things to work on.”

RECORD NIGHT ... Fronheiser threw for all 398 of Lehighton’s yards, on 20-of-22 passing, breaking the school record of 380 by Chris Whiteman set two years ago. The Indians’ QB is just 26 yards away from the 1,000-yard mark this season.

OFFENSE GALORE ... The two teams combined for 1,091 yards on 111 plays, an average of 9.8 yards per play. The Indians had 10 plays of 20-or-more yards, while Haven had nine.
