Food, craft sale to benefit bell tower project

Members of Ebenezer EC Church in Jim Thorpe will be selling food, crafts and other items on Saturday to help raise money for a nearly completed bell tower restoration project.

Pam Moore said the sale will be set up in front of Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank on Broadway from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and among the food offered will be seafood chowder, chicken corn chowder, hot dogs, halushki and chili. There will also be a potpourri of other items for sale including face masks, gnomes, jewelry and more.

“We wanted to do a little something to help out with the money for the bell tower project,” Moore said. “Like anything, the costs go up, so anything we can do is a bonus.”

The church, located in the 400 block of Center Avenue, contracted with Speedwell Construction of Lancaster County to repair its bell tower and chimney, and replace its slate roof, which is original to the 1895 building.

“To us, as a church, these are important repairs for our ministry and our community,” the Rev. Nathan Kennedy said of the work earlier this year. “We want to continue to be a presence here for quite some time. We have been growing as a church and getting more and more younger people involved. There have been generations of families coming here. They have a trust in us, and we believe there is more work to do here. It’s an important place for worship.”

The project was estimated to cost $300,000 and is almost completed, according to Moore, with some scaffolding still on site.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. “When it is lit up at night, it’s really something to see. I hope everyone takes some time to go see it.”
