Hoagie sale

McMichaels UMC is accepting hoagie orders. Orders must be in by Thursday.

Hoagies will be ready for pickup Oct. 8 at the church at noon.

You may call Pastor Ed at 610-5971030 or Ruth Funk at 610-496-8964 to place the order.

There are several kinds, including ham, turkey, roast beef, tuna and veggie, so ask when calling.

OES meeting

Monroe County OES #99 will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Masonic Center on Rimrock Drive.

The group is preparing for a drive-thru dinner to be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 17 at the center.

The menu includes roast pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes and apple sauce; kielbasa, sauerkraut and pierogis; and two hot dogs and sauerkraut.

Preorders are preferred. Call 570-269-7490 or simply stop at the Masonic Center. Checks are to be made out to Monroe Chapter No. 99.

Super soup stirrer

Effort UMC has completed its soup sale. The Super Soup Stirrer title must belong to Bob Decker who made 85 quarts of soup, leading to the church’s raising over $400 for the Connectional Ministry.

That is the missionary arm of the Eastern PA Conference, covering a multitude of missions - local, regional and global - supported by all the member churches of the conference, connecting the church with the community.

WE Pantry needs

Director Karena Thek shares that the West End Pantry can use anything in the food line or toiletry items and/or monetary donations.

Youth kickoff

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, held its Youth Group kickoff for high school students Tuesday night.

Today it is time for the middle school students to have their kick off. It goes from 6 to 7:15 p.m.

Youth are to meet in the Teen Room in the church’s atrium and wear a mask.

Legion meeting

The American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the main hall.

August calls

The Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company responded to 31 emergencies in August and completed 153 hours of training and 170 hours of fundraising.

Up through Sept. 28, the volunteers have responded to 14 emergencies through the month, for a total of 158 emergencies to that date.

The company has also responded to 18 calls in Towamensing Township.

As per approval by the Polk Township Board of Supervisors for the Polk Volunteer Fire Company and the Ladies Auxiliary to use the township’s field for a community yard sale, that sale is taking place Saturday.

One appointment

At this column’s deadline, only one appointment was still open at the American Red Cross blood drive being held at the Chestnuthill Township Park on Friday.

The drive at Cornerstone Community Church on Oct. 21 has only two appointments open.

The next Miller-Keystone Blood Clinic collection at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville is Oct. 7.

Bike Night

The monthly bike night at Post 927 American Legion in Gilbert Friday night is open to the public. It begins at 5 p.m. and goes to 9 p.m. In addition to being able to buy food, there is a drawing, a Best Bike contest and DJ music.

Ham dinner order

Salem-St. Paul Church in Kresgeville is having a ham takeout dinner on Oct. 17. Orders with payment, made out to the church, are due by Oct. 4, c/o Linda Serfass at P.O., Box 168, Kresgeville, PA 18333.

They are also taking orders for celery seed dressing.

Communion Sunday

Effort UMC will celebrate World Communion Sunday this Sunday. Services are held at 8:30, 10 and 11:15 a.m.

Attendees are asked to reserve a seat. All are reminded to wear masks, sanitize one’s hands, practice social distancing, and abide by CDC and state guidelines at all events at the church.

St. John’s Lutheran

St. John’s Lutheran, Effort, will continue with Communion on the first Sunday of each month until the end of the year 2020. Worship time each Sunday is 9:30 a.m. All are welcome.

The church has announced that the fall rummage sale has been canceled. The next sale is slated for June 29, 2021.
