Thursday COVID update: Cases rising throughout region

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported Thursday that there were 853 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 153,397. Centre County, where Penn State is located, is reporting an increase of 109 cases.

There are 8,079 total deaths attributed to COVID-19, an increase of 17 new deaths reported.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 22,498 resident cases of COVID-19, and 4,936 cases among employees, for a total of 27,434 at 969 distinct facilities in 61 counties. Out of our total deaths, 5,397 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

Approximately 10,513 of our total cases are among health care workers.

Carbon County is reporting 458 cases, an increase of three, with 28 deaths.

Lehigh County has 5,551 positives, an increase of 21 cases. An additional death is reported, bringing the total to 352.

Luzerne County has 10 additional cases, for a total of 4,060. Deaths remain at 189.

Monroe County has 1,785 cases, an increase of five. One more death was attributed to coronavirus, for a total of 133.

In Northampton County, there are 4,443 cases, an increase of 22, with 305 deaths.

In Schuylkill County, 18 more cases have been confirmed, for a total of 1,094. There are 52 deaths.
